About the Arriba Abajo Learning Guide

Listening to the album and doing the Learning Guide activities is a great way to enrich bilingual and dual-emergent classrooms, as well as households where children speak two languages at home. The activities can be used with children at any level of bilingualism – from fluent bilinguals to emergent speakers just developing their second language. Finally, the music and activities can also be used with monolingual English or Spanish-speaking children to build language skills in their native language. Through the songs and activities, children acquire new vocabulary and academic language – in both English and Spanish – in a fun and innovative way.

The activities are targeted for children ages 2-6, but we don’t intend to limit its use to this age range. Throughout the Learning Guide you will see notes about how to adapt the activities for “older” or “younger” children. Feel free to use the activities with any child that you believe would benefit from these highly engaging experiences!

The Learning Guide was developed in conjunction with master classroom teacher, Heidemarie Freund-West. Heidemarie is a trilingual (Spanish, German, English), results-oriented, award-winning elementary school educator with over twenty years of experience working in elementary school classrooms, providing district level training for teachers, giving special trainings and presentations at UCLA and other universities, and consulting on multiple subjects with curriculum developers. Heidemarie has a Multiple Subject K-12 Teaching Credential and numerous other professional certificates.
